Biographical Notes.

·         Parents: Jeremiah Cowley and unknown mother, of St. Albans, Hertfordshire, Fellmonger.

·         Date of Birth: 16?? exact date and place of birth unknown.

·         Marriage 1: William Bramham on 7 March 1700 in Friends’ Meeting House, Ipswich, Suffolk.  William died between 1708-1712.

·         Marriage 2:  Robert Ludgater in 1718 in Friends’ Meeting House, Colchester, Essex.

·         Meetings:  Woodbridge MM then Coggeshall MM, then Witham MM (assumed).

·         Date of Death: 1739, exact date unknown, at Chelmsford, Essex.

·         She had no children by either of her husbands, but had step-children and step-grandchildren from Robert Ludgater’s first marriage to Mary Isaac.  She was the fourth and last wife of Robert Ludgater, who died around 1723.

Highlights of Will

·         Name of Executor:  Thomas Reynolds, kinsman, Indigo maker of Gracechurch Street, London.  He was not a Quaker.

·         She left her kinswoman Elizabeth Lum of Chelmsford, Essex, £30 and all her household goods and clothing in her possession.  She also left her £4 per annum out of an annuity held by her.  In the Codicil she was left an additional £41 10 shillings.

·         She left Elizabeth Lum, daughter of Elizabeth Lum, forty shillings (£2) and two silver spoons.

·         She left her “son” Isaac Ludgater of Coggeshall, Essex, James Granger of Somerton, Suffolk, and John Cowley, of London, £5 each.  The bequests to Isaac Ludgater and James Granger were revoked in the Codicil.

·         She left Thomas Reynolds junior of London £5 plus £3 per annum out of an annuity held by her.

·         She left her Friend Hannah Markes of Coggeshall, Essex, £4.

·         She left Isaac Cook of Coggeshall, Essex, £3.

·         She left Matthew Bouth of Yorkshire, £2 10 shillings.  This was revoked in the Codicil.

·         She left Martha Dady of Bradfield, Essex, £2 10 shillings. 

·         She left Mary Gibson of Royston, Hertfordshire, and Etheldred Brett of near Royston, Hertfordshire, £2 each.

·         She left her “brother” William Ludgater, John Clark, Samual Clark, Mary Bundock of Chelmsford, Elizabeth Dennis, 20 shillings (£1) each.

·         She left Elizabeth Stevenson junior the remaining amount of £29 on a bond owed to her by Barnaby Stevenson, Elizabeth’s father.

·         She left her three “grandchildren” Robert Ludgater, Sarah Ludgater and Robert Ludgater all the goods left by her late husband to be equally divided between them.

·         She left her “grandson” Robert Ludgater of Coggeshall £3 per annum from an annuity held by her.

·         She left her “brother” William Ludgater, John Clark and Samual Clark 20 shillings (£1) each.

Transcriber’s and Editor’s Notes

This is one of a series of linked Ludgater family wills, including her husband Robert Ludgater (1724).  Her first husband William Bramhan also left a will (1712).  Her “sons” Isaac Ludgater and Robert Ludgater were actually her step-sons.  Her “grandchildren” Robert, Sarah and Robert Ludgater were actually her step-grandchildren.  Her “brother” William Ludgater was actually the brother of her late husband. Isaac Cook was her step-grandson-in-law.

I Mary Ludgater of Chelmsford

in the county of Essex widow being in good health of body

and of a Sound and disposing mind memory and understanding

do therefore this Sixteenth day of August one Thousand Seven

hundred and thirty one Ordain this my last Will and Testament

in manner and form following that is after my just debts and

Funeral Expences is paid I give the following Legacies Imprimis

I give and bequeath to Mathew Bouth near Ferry Bridge in

Yorkshire Two pounds Ten Shillings Item I give to James Granger

of Somerton In Suffolk the sum of five pounds Item I give to

Martha Dady Wife of John Dady of Bradfield in the County of

Essex Two pounds Ten Shillings Item I have in my possession a Bond

of Barnaby Stevenson of Oakley in the County of Essex for

Forty pounds eleven pounds whereof is paid and the remaining

Twenty Nine pounds unpaid at my decease I give to his Daughter

Eliz: Stevenson or so much of the Same as Shall remain unpaid Item

I give to my Son Isaac Ludgater of Coggshall The sum of five pounds

Item I give to my three Grand Children Robt. Ludgater son of Robt.

Ludgater and his Sister Sarah Ludgater and Robert Ludgater son

of Isaac Ludgater all the Goods that my Husband Ludgater left me

to be equally divided amongst them Item I give to Isaac Cook

of Coggshall the sum of three pounds Item I give to my Brother

Item I have an Annuity of Ten pounds per Annum payable by

the Governours and Company for raising the Thames Water

in York Buildings for the Continuation of the natural Lives of

Eliz: Lum wife of Stephen Lum of Chelmsford in the County of

Essex and Robt. Ludgater of the same County Felmonger

and as there is due from my Kinsman Stephen Lum to my Kinsman

Thos: Reynolds of London Forty pounds I do hereby order

that the said Thomas Reynolds be fully Satisfied and paid

the above said Sum of Forty pounds or so much thereof as is

unpaid and not satisfied at my decease may be paid out of

my Annuity of Ten pounds per annum payable as above and

after that is fully Satisfied and paid I do give my Kinswoman

Eliz: Lum Wife of Stephen Lum of Chelmsford four pounds

per Annum out of the same Annuity and Three pounds per

Annum to my Grandson Robt. Ludgater of Coggshall and Three

pounds per annum to my Kinsman Thos. Reynolds junr. of London

and if the abovesaid Eliz. Lum should dye before the above said

Robt. Ludgater then its my request and desire that Eliz: Lum

Daughter of the abovesaid Eliza. Lum should have four pounds

per Annum but if the abovesaid Eliz: Lum Wife of Stephen Lum

Should Survive the said Robt. Ludgater then I do order and

appoint that the abovesaid Eliza: Lum should receive Six pounds

per Annum out of the said Annuity and the abovesaid Thos. Reynolds

Junr. the other four pounds per annum and if it should so happen

that there should be a difficiency in recovering of and getting in

of my debts my Will is that every Legatee bear a proportionable part in

the Loss according to their respective Legacies and I do hereby order

and appoint my Kinsman Thos. Reynolds Indigo maker of Grace

Church Street London to be my full whole and Sole Executor of

this my last Will and Testament and do revoke all others by me

made  Mary Ludgater - Signed and sealed in the presence of us

Richd. Reynolds,  John Dixon  Willm. Bear./.

 

A Codicil to be annexed to my last Will and Testament

which Will bears date the Sixteenth day of August One Thousand

Seven hundred and Thirty One Whereas I Mary Ludgater

have in my Will given unto my Son Isaac Ludgater of Coggshall

the sum of five pounds and unto James Granger of Somerton in

Suffolk the sum of five pounds and unto Mathew Bouth near

Ferry Bridge in Yorkshire Two pounds Ten Shillings and unto

Elizabeth Stevenson Daughter of Barnaby Stevenson of Oakley

in the County of Essex Twenty Nine pounds remaining unpaid

of his Bond in my possession or so much of the same as should remain

unpaid I Do by this Codicil revoke and make Void the same four

Several Legacies and I do give and bequeath the same vizt. Five

pounds five pounds, Two pounds Ten Shillings and the said Twenty

nine pounds due on the said Barnaby Stevenson’s Bond unto

my loving Kinswoman Elizabeth Lum Wife of Stephen Lum of

Chelmsford for her own Seperate use Notwithstanding her Couverture

And I do ratifye and confirm my said Will in all other respects

In Witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and seal

this Thirty first day of January One Thousand seven hundred and

Thirty Eight  - Mary Ludgater - Signed Sealed published declared

and Delivered by the said Mary Ludgater as a Codicil to her last

Will and attested by us whose names are hereunder subscribed in

This Will was proved at London with a Codicil annexed

the Second day of April in the year of Our Lord one Thousand Seven

hundred thirty Nine before the Worshipfull Edward Simpson Doctor of

Laws Surrogate to the right Worshipfull John Bettesworth also

Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative

Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oath of Thomas

Reynolds the Executor named in the said Will To whom Administration

was granted of all and Singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of

the said deceased being first sworn duely to Administer ./. Exd:
