·         Parents: Joshua Appleby ( 1728 - 1754) of Durham, Chemist, and Ann (née Ford) (1731-1765) formerly of Haregate Hall, Leek, Staffordshire

·         Date of birth: 21 September 1754, Durham City

·         Occupation: Companion to Sarah Darby (1752-1821) (daughter of Abraham 1711-1763 and Abiah Darby 1716-1794), lived with the Darby family at Coalbrookdale, from the mid 1770s untill her own death in 1827

·         To Deborah Darby the bedstead with mahogany posts and Green maroon furniture, feather bed mattress, bolster and three pillows, four blankets, a counterpane, one double and one single mahogany chest of drawers, oak tent bedstead and cotton cover, feather bed, bolster and two pillows, small oak chest of drawers, small mahogany turn-up table, swing glass, two mahogany washing stands, dumb waiter, mahogany box with drawer, smaller Turkey carpet, two large Diaper cloths, one small Diaper cloth twelve Diaper napkins marked 12, six fine Diaper towels marked S.D., twelve towels marked 12 and the remaining half part of all earthenware.

·         To Joseph Dickinson two large dining tables with the round ends and the cotton cover usually used therewith and the set of mahogany chairs with black horse hair seats and two large cupboards.

·         To Mary Darby Dickinson her large mahogany linen press and a Brussels carpet.

·         To Sarah Dickinson her mahogany desk and bookcase, small dressing mahogany chest of drawers, best swing glass and one oval mahogany table.

·         To Rebecca Dickinson one double mahogany chest of drawers.

·         To Hannah Dickinson one dressing chest of drawers with a swing glass.

·         To Samuel Dickinson six mahogany chairs with horse hair seats and one square mahogany dining table.

·         To Francis Dickinson two small mahogany tables.

·         To the children of Edmund and Lucy Darby half of her books and the other half to the children of Ann Dickinson, Francis Darby and Richard Darby equally.

·         To the children of Edmund Darby half of her remaining household linen and cutlery and the other half to Ann Dickinson for her children.

·         To Barnard Dickinson, Ann Dickinson, Lucy Darby and John Scott in trust her largest oak linen chest and the mahogany cupboard to hold and be enjoyed a heirlooms.

·         To Ann Dickinson the small dressing chest of drawers in fine walnut which belonged to her grandmother Abiah Darby, all wearing apparel, the sampler, small boxes and travelling trunks which belonged to her late aunt Sarah Darby, also all the rest and residue of her household goods furniture, linen, china, glass and household implements.

·         To nieces Elizabeth Scott and Sarah Appleby equally, the rest and residue of her money, securities for money, public stocks or funds and the remainder of her personal estate and effects.

First Codicil:

·         Recording that John Scott had removed himself as Trustee and Executor.

·         Appointed Abraham Darby in the place of John Scott.

Second Codicil:

·         Revises the fund held by the Trustees in favour of Susannah Tothill, from £1,400 to £1,000.

·         To the Clerk of the Monthly Meeting of Shropshire £200 to be invested and the income applied to the upkeep of the several meeting houses and grave yards.

·         To the members of the Monthly Meeting of Shropshire £200 to be invested and the income applied to assist in the education of any child or placing him or her as an apprentice, whose parents may not be able to do so, also to assist any member who may be a patient at the Retreat, York.

·         To the Trustees an additional £10 p.a. towards the support described for the education and maintenance of Joshua Appleby, to reflect the reduced rates of interest available.

Third Codicil:

·         Revokes the directions for the payment of the income from £1,000 and two Canal shares to Robert Spence for weekly payments to brother Edward Appleby, instead the Trustees are to pay the same, weekly to Elizabeth Appleby his wife during their lives, afterwards as previously directed.

·         Revokes the bequest of £40 to the Trustees for the benefit of the poor of Coalbrookdale and directs that preference is to be given first to three widows, Eleanor Lea, Mary Tushingham and Susanna Pool who are to be paid 2s. – 6d. each every four weeks until the £40 is expended.

·         To the Trustees a further £100 to aid the education of great nephew Joshua Appleby at Joseph Edmonson’s School at Panketh or similar until age 14 or apprenticed, with reversions.

Fourth Codicil:

·         Revokes the bequest of £500 to the Trustees to invest for the benefit of Alfred Darby, in lieu of which he is to receive £300 12 months after her death.

·         To Thomas Graham £100.

·         To William Morris £50.

Transcriber’s and Editor’s Notes

·         Susanna Appleby was a Quaker Minister travelling mainly in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland with Deborah Darby, Ann Summerland, Rebecca Young, Mary Lloyd or Mary Ridgway.

·         Companion to Sarah Darby (1752-1821) a distant relative, daughter of Abraham (II) (1711-1763) and Abiah Darby (1716-1794), lived with the Darby family at Sunniside, Coalbrookdale from the mid 1770s till her death in 1827.

Will as transcribed from a copy of the original document

This is the last Will and testament of me Susanna

Appleby of Coalbrookdale in the county of Salop Spinster made the Sixteenth

day of January in the Year of the Lord One thousand eight hundred and

twenty four First I desire to be decently buried at the discretion of my

Executors and Executrixes hereinafter named and that my just debts

and Funeral and testamentary Expenses may be discharged as soon as

conveniently may be after my decease I give devise and bequeath unto my

dear Friends Barnard Dickinson of Coalbrookdale aforesaid Ironmaster and

Lucy Darby of the same Place Widow of my late dear Friend Edmund

Darby their heirs Executors and Administrators respectively all the manor

Messuages Lands tenements and real Estate which at the time of my

decease I shall be Solely Seized or possessed of or entitled to or interested

in either in trust for any purposes or by way of mortgages to hold the

same unto and to the use of the said Barnard Dickinson and Lucy

Darby their heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns respectively

according to the legal quality or qualities of such Estates respectively

Upon and for the trusts intents and purposes and under and Subject to

the provisoes and Conditions which shall be Subsisting in or

concerning such Several Estates at the time of my decease And I

request my beloved friend Ann Dickinson the Wife of the said Barnard

Dickinson to examine and sort all my letters and writings and to burn

such of them as she may consider unworthy of preservation and to

deliver those which she may reserve (except deeds and Securities

for money) to my Niece Elizabeth Scott late Elizabeth Appleby

daughter of my Brother Edward Appleby to whom I bequeath  the

same for her own use I also give and bequeath unto my said Niece

Elizabeth Scott my brown Chrystall buttons set in gold which I highly

value having been left to me as a remembrance by my late

beloved Mother I also give and bequeath to my said Niece my White

Chrystal Seal set in gold and to her and her sister Sarah Appleby

my Wearing Apparel to be equally divided between them Share

and Share alike to my Niece the said Sarah Appleby my White Cornelian

Seal set in Silver and my Silver fruit Knife and fork and I give and bequeath

unto my dear Friends Rebecca Darby the Widow of my late Friend Abraham

Darby the said Ann Dickinson Rachael Fowler (Wife of Robert Fowler) of Melksham

in the County of Wilts Gentleman Hannah Barnard (wife of Robert Barnard)

of Coalbrookdale aforesaid Gentleman Mary Young of Coalport in the County

of Salop Spinster Jane Younger her sister Elizabeth Haines of Coalbrookdale

aforesaid Spinster Sarah Ismay Sankey late Sarah Ismay Scott Spinster

Elizabeth Sankey and Hannah Sankey Spinsters all of Coalbrookdale

aforesaid the Sum of Five Pounds each to my dear Friend Rebecca

Byrd Wife of William Byrd of Marnhull in the County of Dorset the

Sum of twenty Pounds and to my kind Assistant Elizabeth Selby if she

shall be living with me at the time of my decease the Sum of One

hundred Pounds And I hope the Several legacies hereinbefore bequeathed

will be received by the said Several legatees as small tokens of my

affectionate remembrance of them And I give and bequeath unto the

said Barnard Dickinson Ann Dickinson Lucy Darby and John Scott of

London Commission Merchant the Husband of my said Niece Elizabeth

the Sum of Forty pounds to be distributed by them or the Survivors or

Survivor of them amongst the Poor residing at and in the Neighbourhood

of the Horsehay in the Parish of Dawley in the County of Salop and

the like Sum of Forty Pounds to be distributed among the Poor residing

at Coalbrookdale aforesaid and I leave the Choice of objects and the

way manner and time or times of distributing the two last mentioned

legacies after my said trustees shall have received or retained the

same in the discretion of my said trustees or the Survivors or Survivor

of them knowing that they will do all the good in their Power in the

application of them and only requesting that Widows and Orphans

may generally have a preference And I give and bequeath unto

the said Barnard Dickinson Ann Dickinson Lucy Darby and John Scott

the further sum of  Forty Pounds to be by them or the Survivors or

Survivor of them distributed among the indigent members of the

Society of Friends residing in the several Counties of Radnor

Merioneth and Montgomery the choice of objects and the proportion

to be given to each person or Family I leave in the discretion of my

said trustees or the Survivors or Survivor of them knowing that they

will comply with my intention and Circumstances may occur but

my wish is that a preference may generally be given to persons

having large Families and who shall not receive any pecuniary

aid from their respective monthly meetings or from the half Yearly

meetings of Friends for the principality of Wales And I hereby direct

that the said three legacies shall be paid clear of legacy duty and all

other Expences my Will being that such duty and expenses shall be

paid out of the residue of my Personal Estate hereinafter bequeathed

And I give and bequeath unto the said Lucy Darby all my Stores and

provisions for housekeeping to be delivered to her immediately after

my decease and also the Sum of two hundred Pounds And I give and

bequeath unto Alfred Darby Son of my late dear Friend Edmund Darby

the Sum of Five hundred Pounds and I direct that my said trustees

Barnard Dickinson Ann Dickinson Lucy Darby and John Scott or the

Survivors or Survivor of them or the Executors or Administrators

of such Survivor do and shall at the end of twelve months from the

time of my decease (at which time I desire that the same shall

be payable)  lay out the said legacy of Five hundred Pounds in some

of the Parliamentary or Public Stocks or Funds of Great Britain or at

Interest on real Securities in England in their names or in the

names or name of the Survivors or Survivor of them and do and shall

from time to time receive and take the Interest Dividends and Annual

Produce thereof and invest the same on other such Stocks Funds or

Securities so that the same may accumulate for the benefit of the

said Alfred Darby until he shall attain the Age of twenty one Years and

when and as soon as he shall attain that Age do and shall receive

the money to arise by or from the said Stocks Funds and Securities

and pay the same with the accumulation thereon to the said

Alfred Darby for his benefit but in case the said Alfred Darby shall die

under the said Age of twenty one Years leaving Child or Children

then my Will is that the legacy hereby bequeathed to him with

all accumulation thereon shall go and be paid to such Child or

Children but if he shall depart this life under that Age without

Child or Children born in his lifetime or in due time after his

decease then I direct that the said legacy and the accumulation

thereon shall go and be paid to his two Sisters Mary and Deborah

to be equally divided between them Share and Share alike but in

case either of them shall depart this life under the Age of twenty

one Years and unmarried then I direct the Share of her so dying

unmarried with the accumulation thereon shall be paid to the

Survivor of them And in case both of them the said Mary Darby

and Deborah Darby shall die under the said Age of twenty one Years

and unmarried then my Will is that the said Stocks Funds and

Securities and all accumulations thereon shall go and be paid to

Abraham Darby their eldest Brother his Executors and Administrators

And I give and bequeath the said Barnard Dickinson Ann

Dickinson Lucy Darby and John Scott their Executors and Administrators

the Sum of One thousand Pounds to be paid at the end of twelve months

from the time of my decease and to carry Interest after the rate of

four Pounds Per Centum Per Annum from the day of my death and

also two of my Shares in the Shropshire Canal Navigation Upon trust

that they or the Survivor of them or the Executors or Administrators

of such Survivors do and shall lay out and invest the said Sum of

One thousand Pounds in their his or her names or name in some of

the Parliamentary Stocks or Public Funds of Great Britain or at

Interest on real Securities in England And do and shall receive and

take the dividends interest and Annual Produce thereof and of the

said two Canal Shares and from time to time to pay the same unto

my Brother the said Edward Appleby during the term of his natural

life and my Will is that the same shall be paid to my said Brother by

equal Weekly Payments through the Agency of my Friend Robert

Spence of Northshields in the County of Northumberland and in case of

his death or declining to act of some other person whom my trustees

or trustee for the time being may fix upon for that purpose and

immediately from and after the decease of my said Brother do and

shall transfer or Assign one of the said Shares in the said Canal to my

said Niece Elizabeth Scott and the other of such Shares to my said Niece

Sarah Appleby their respective Executors Administrators or Assigns for

their own Several benefits to whom respectively I give and bequeath

the same accordingly and as to the said Sum of One thousand Pounds

and the Stocks Funds or Securities which the same shall be

invested after the decease of my said Brother Upon trust that they my

said trustees or the Survivors or Survivor or their his or her Executors

Administrators or Assigns do and shall in case Elizabeth the present

Wife of my said Brother Edward shall happen to Survive him receive and

take the Interest Dividends and Annual Produce of the same Stocks

Funds and Securities and pay the same to my said Sister in law Elizabeth

Appleby during the term of her natural life in the proportions and through

the Agency aforesaid and immediately from and after the decease of the

Survivor of said Brother and the said Elizabeth his Wife do and shall

call in and receive the said last mentioned Stocks Funds and Securities

and pay and divide the monies arising therefrom unto between and

among my three Nieces Susannah Ward Wife of Edward Ward Mariner

Elizabeth Scott and Sarah Appleby the three Daughters of my said Brother

in equal Shares and proportions And I give and bequeath unto the said

Barnard Dickinson Ann Dickinson Lucy Darby and John Scott their

Executors and Administrators the further Sum of two hundred Pounds to

be paid to them at the end of twelve months from the time of my decease

and to carry Interest after the rate aforesaid from the day of my death

Upon trust that they or the Survivors or Survivor of them or the

Executors Administrators or Assigns of such Survivor do and shall

lay out and invest that same on their his or her names or name

in the purchase of some of the Parliamentary Stocks or Public Funds

of Great Britain or at Interest on real Securities in England and

do and shall from time to time receive and take the Dividends

Interest and Annual Produce thereof and pay the same to my

Nephew Jonathan the only Son of my said Brother Edward Appleby

during the term of his natural life and immediately from and

after his decease do and shall stand and be possessed of and interested

in such last mentioned Stocks Funds and Securities Upon the trusts

and for the purposes hereinafter declared thereof jointly with the Sum

of three hundred Pounds next hereinafter bequeathed And I

give and bequeath unto the said Barnard Dickinson Ann Dickinson

Lucy Darby and John Scott their Executors and Administrators

the further Sum of three hundred Pounds to be paid to them

at the end of twelve months from the time of my decease and

to carry Interest after the rate aforesaid from the day of my death

and also one other of my Shares in the said Shropshire Canal

Navigation Upon trust that they or the Survivors or Survivor

of them or their Executors Administrators or Assigns of each Survivor

do and shall lay out and invest the said Sum of three hundred

Pounds in their his or her names or name in the Purchase of some

of the Parliamentary Stocks or Public Funds of Great Britain or at

Interest or real Securities in England and do and shall from time

to time receive and take the Interest dividends and Annual Produce

thereof and of the said Sum of two hundred pounds hereinbefore

bequeathed for the benefit of my said Nephew Jonathan Appleby

(Subject to the life Interest of my said Nephew therein) and also the

dividends and Annual Produce of the said last mentioned Canal

Share and pay apply and dispose thereof of in the Education and for

the benefit of my Great Nephew Joshua the Son of the said Jonathan

Appleby until he shall have attained the Age of twenty one Years it

being my earnest wish that he should be placed at such a School

as will qualify him for a respectable trade or business and when

and as soon as he shall have attained the Age of twenty one

Years do and shall pay transfer and Assign the said last mentioned

Stocks Funds Securities and Canal Shares (Subject as to the said Sum)

of two hundred Pounds to the life interest of my said Nephew therein)

unto my said Great Nephew Joseph ˄Joshua ˄ Appleby his Executors Adm̅ors

and Assigns for his and their own benefit but in case my said Great

Nephew shall be under the Age of twenty one Years then my Will

is that the said two Sums of two hundred Pounds and three hundred

Pounds and the Stocks Funds Securities and Canal Shares last

mentioned shall sink into and be considered a part from my residuary

Estate hereinafter bequeathed And I give and bequeath unto the

said Barnard Dickinson Ann Dickinson Lucy Darby and John Scott

their Executors and Administrators the Sum of One thousand four

hundred Pounds to be paid at the end of twelve months from the

time of my decease and to carry Interest in the mean time after the

rate aforesaid Upon trust that they or the Survivors or Survivor

do and shall lay out and invest the same Sum of One thousand

four hundred Pounds in their his or her names or name in the

Purchase of some of the Parliamentary Stocks or Public Funds of

Great Britain or at Interest on real Securities in England and do

and shall from time to time receive and take the Interest Dividends

and Annual proceeds thereof and pay the same to my beloved

Friend Hannah the wife of William Tothill of the City of Bristol

Merchant late Hannah Darby Spinster and her Assigns during the

term of her natural life for her own Sole and Separate benefit

independent of and free from the debts Controul or interference of

her said present or any future Husband for which purpose my Will is

that her receipts alone notwithstanding any Coverture shall be

good and effectual discharges for the same and immediately

from and after the decease of the said Hannah Tothill do and

shall stand and be possessed of and interested in such last mentioned

Stocks Funds and Securities In trust for all and every the Children

and Child of the said Hannah Tothill now born or hereafter to

be born who shall live to attain the Age of twenty one Years and

the lawful issue of all such of the same Children as shall die under

that Age leaving lawful issue living at their his or her decease or

respective deceases or (as to the issue of a deceased Son or Sons )

born in due time afterwards which issue shall afterwards attain

the Age of twenty one Years or die under that Age leaving ˄issue ˄ at his

her or their decease or respective deceases as tenants in Common

if more than one but such issue to take the Share or Shares only

which his her or their Parent or Parents respectively

would have taken if living And in case all the Children of the

said Hannah Tothill shall die under the Age of twenty one

Years without leaving issue then my Will is and I hereby direct

that the Stocks Funds and Securities last mentioned shall go and

be paid to and among the Children of my Friends Francis Darby

and Richard Darby of Coalbrook Dale aforesaid Ironmasters either

already born or hereafter to be born on the respective bodies of their

present wives in equal Shares and proportions And I give and

bequeath unto my Brother-in-law George Chandler of Blackwall

near London who married my late Sister Ann the Sum of Sixty

Pounds and to his Son Joseph by my said Sister Ann the Sum of

three hundred Pounds and to the said Susanna Ward the wife of

the said Edward Ward the Sum of One hundred Pounds for their

own respective uses I give and bequeath unto the said Barnard

Dickinson Ann Dickinson Lucy Darby and John Scott their Executors

Administrators and Assigns the further Sum of Five hundred Pounds to

be paid at the end of twelve months from the time of my decease

with Interest for the same after the rate of Four Pounds Per Centum

Per Annum to be computed from the day of my death Upon trust

that they or the Survivors or Survivor of them or the Executors

Administrators or Assigns of such Survivor do and shall lay out

and invest the Sum of Five hundred Pounds in their his or

her names or name in the purchase ^of some^ of the Parliamentary Stocks

or Public Funds of Great Britain or at Interest in real Securities in

England and do and shall from time to time receive and take the

interest dividends and Annual Produce thereof and Pay the same

unto the said George Chandler and his Assigns during the term of

his natural life for his own use and from and after his decease do

and shall stand and be possessed of and interested in such last mentioned

Stocks Funds and Securities In trust for all and every the Children

shall live to attain the Age of twenty one years and the lawful

issue of all such of the same Child or Children as shall die under

of twenty one Years or die under that Age leaving issue at his her

his her or their deceased Parent or Parents respectively would have taken

if living and I give and bequeath unto the said Barnard Dickinson Ann

Dickinson Lucy Darby and John Scott their Executors Administrators and

Assigns the Sum of three hundred pounds to be paid at the end of twelve

months from the time of my decease but with interest for the same after

the rate of four Pounds Per Centum Per Annum to be computed from the

day of my death Upon trust that they or the Survivors or Survivor of them

or the Executors Administrators or Assigns of such Survivor do and shall

lay out and invest the same Sum of three hundred Pounds in their

his or her names or name in the purchase of some of the Parliamentary

Stocks or Public Funds of Great Britain or at Interest on real Securities

in England and do and shall from time to time receive and take the

Interest Dividends and Annual Proceeds thereof and Pay the same in

Weekly Payments through the Agency of Eliza Pryor Wife of Nathaniel Pryor

of Gracechurch Street London Silversmith unto my Niece Mary the

Wife of -  Leete and one of the Daughters of my said Brother-in-law

George Chandler and her Assigns during the term of her natural life

for her sole and separate benefit independent of the debts Controul or

interference of her said present or any future Husband for which purpose

my Will is that her receipts alone notwithstanding any coverture shall

use and request my Executors and Executrixes to divide all my

Books into two Moieties or equal half parts and to deliver one

moiety or equal half parts thereof unto the four Children of the

said Edmund Darby and Lucy his Wife in equal Shares and

the remaining Moiety or equal half Part thereof unto such of

the Children of the said Ann Dickinson and the said Francis

Darby and Richard Darby as shall be living at the time of my

decease in equal Shares and I give and bequeath the same to

the said Children accordingly and I also request my Executors and

Executrixes to divide the residue of all my Household Linen and

also my Table and Dessert Knives and Forks into two moieties or

equal half parts and to deliver one moiety or equal half part

thereof unto the said four Children of the said Edmund Darby and

Lucy his wife in equal Shares and the remaining moiety or

equal half part thereof to the said Ann Dickinson for the benefit

of herself and her Children and I bequeath the same to them

accordingly and I do hereby give and bequeath unto the said

Barnard Dickinson Ann Dickinson Lucy Darby and John Scott

my largest Oak Linen Chest now in one of ^the^ Attics of the Dwelling

House now in my own occupation at Coalbrookdale and also

the Mahogany Cupboard in the Parlour of my said Dwellinghouse

called the Stone Parlour to have and to hold the same unto the

said Barnard Dickinson Ann Dickinson Lucy Darby and John

Scott their Executors Administrators and Assigns In trust to

permit the same to be held and enjoyed with the said Dwellinghouse

as heir looms by the person or persons who for the time being shall

be entitled to the possession of the same Dwellinghouse under the

Will of my late dear Friend Sarah Darby and I give and bequeath

to the said Ann Dickinson a Small Dressing Chest of Drawers of

Fine Walnut tree Wood which formerly belonged to her late honoured

Grandmother Abiah Darby and also all Wearing Apparel the

Sampler small Boxes and Travelling Trunks which lately belonged

to her late Aunt Sarah Darby and I also give and bequeath unto

the said Ann  Dickinson all the rest and residue of my household

Goods and Furniture Linen China Glass and Implements of

Household to hold the same unto the said Ann Dickinson her heirs

Executors Administrators and Assigns to and for her and their own

use and I direct that all the pecuniary legacies hereinbefore

bequeathed excepted where I have ordered otherwise shall be

paid at the end of twelve months from the time of my decease and as

to all the rest and residue of my monies Securities for money

money in the Public Stocks or Funds and all the Remainder of my

Personal Estate and Effects whatsoever and wheresoever Subject

to the Payment of my Debts legacies Funeral and testamentary

Expenses and the legacy duty hereinbefore directed to be paid

thereout I give and bequeath the same and every part thereof

unto my said two Nieces Elizabeth Scott and Sarah Appleby to be

equally divided between them Share and Share alike their

respective Executors Administrators and Assigns Provided

always and my Will is that it shall and I may be lawful to and

for my trustees and trustee for the time being at any time or

times and from time to time as they shall think it expedient to

alter vary and transpose the said trust moneys Stocks Funds and

Securities or any part thereof by Selling or converting into

money or calling in the same respectively and laying out and

investing the monies to arise thereby in or Upon any other

Parliamentary or other Stocks or Funds of Great Britain or real

Securities in England and to be holden Upon under and subject to

the trusts and Powers hereinbefore declared and contained of and

concerning the aforesaid trusts monies Stocks Funds and Securities

respectively ^or^ such of them as shall be then Subsisting or Capable of

taking Effect and my Will further is and I hereby declare that

the receipts in writing of my trustees and trustee for the time

being shall be good and Sufficient acquittances and discharges

to any person or persons paying in or discharging my Personal

Estate or any part thereof or any monies Stocks Funds or Securities

to be acquired under the trusts of this my Will for all monies to be

paid by him her or them and that the same person or persons is her

or their Executors Administrators or Assigns shall not afterwards

be answerable or accountable for the loss misapplication or nonapplication

or be in any wise obliged or concerned to see to the application

thereof or any part thereof provided Also and I hereby declare

that if the trustees hereby appointed ^or^ any or either of them or any

trustees or trustee to be appointed in the place or stead of them or

any of them or ^of^ any future trustees or trustee as hereinafter

mentioned shall die or shall go to reside beyond the Seas or

shall be desirous of being discharged from or decline or become

incapable to act in the Several trusts hereby in them reposed

before the said trusts shall be fully performed then and in any

such case it shall and may be lawful for the Surviving or

continuing trustees or trustee or the Executors or Administrators

of a last Surviving trustee by any writing or writings under

his her or their hands and Seals or hand and Seal from time

to time to nominate substitute and appoint any other persons or

person to be trustees or trustee in the place or stead of the trustees

or trustee so dying going to reside beyond the Seas or being

desirous of being discharged or declining or becoming incapable

to act as aforesaid and thereupon all the monies and Premises

hereby bequeathed Upon the trusts aforesaid or to be produced

under any of the said trusts shall with all Convenient Speed

be assigned and transferred so and in such manner that the

same may be legally and effectually vesting in the Surviving

or Continuing trustees or trustee and such new or other trustees or

trustee or if there shall be no continuing trustees then in such

new trustees only Upon the same trusts and with the same Powers

and authorities as are herein before declared and contained of and

concerning the same monies and Premises or such of the same

trusts and Powers as shall or may be then Subsisting or capable of

taking effect And it is my will that my trustees for the time being and

every of them and their respective Executors Administrators and

Assigns shall be charged and Chargeable respectively only for such

monies as they shall respectively actually receive by virtue

of the trusts hereby in them reposed notwithstanding they or any

of them may give Sign or join in any receipt or receipts for the

Sake of conformity and that such of them shall be answerable

only for himself and herself and his or her own acts and that they

or any of them shall not be answerable for any Banker Broker or

or other person with whom or in whose hands any part of the said

trust monies to arise under this my Will shall or may be deposited

nor for the insufficiency or deficiency of any Security in or upon

which the said trust monies of Stocks or any part thereof shall be

placed out or invested nor for any other misfortune loss or damage

in the execution of the trusts of this my Will or any of them unless

the same shall happen by or through their own wilful default

respectively And that it shall and maybe lawful to and for the

trustees or trustee for the time being to retain to and reimburse

themselves and every of them respectively and to allow their

his or her Co-trustee or Co-trustees by or out of the trust Estates funds

and Premises comprised in or to arise under this my Will all

Costs damages and expenses which they or any of them shall or

may Sustain expend disburse or be put unto in or about the execution

of the aforesaid trusts or any of them or in relation thereunto And

lastly I hereby nominate constitute and appoint the said Barnard

Dickinson Ann Dickinson Lucy Darby and John Scott  Executors and

Executrixes in trust of this my Will and revoke all former Wills by

me made In Witness whereof I the said Susanna Appleby have

to this my last Will and testament contained on Six Sheets of

Paper set my hand to the first five Sheets and to this Sixth and last

Sheet hereof set my hand and affixed my Seal and Published and

declared the same to be my last Will and testament the day and

Whereas I Susanna Appleby of Coalbrookdale in

the County of Salop Spinster have made my last Will and testament

in Writing bearing the date on about the        day     of       last past

And I have thereby given and bequeathed unto my Friends Barnard

Dickinson of Coalbrookdale aforesaid Ironmaster Ann Dickinson his

wife Lucy Darby of Coalbrookdale aforesaid Widow of my late Friend

Edmund Darby and John Scott of London Commission Merchant

Sundry Sums of Money and other Personal Estate and Effects on

certain trusts in my said Will particularly set forth and I have

appointed the said John Scott one of the Executors of my said Will

And whereas the said John Scott has Signified to me that he shall decline

to act as such trustee and Executor of my said Will and therefore I do

by this writing which I declare to be a Codicil to my said last Will

and testament and direct the same to be considered and taken as

part thereof revoke Annul and make void all the devises and bequests

contained in my said Will of all and every the monies and Premises

and other trust property mentioned in my said Will so far as the same

may be devised or bequeathed respectively to the said John Scott

but no further and also the appointment of the said John Scott as a

trustee and Executor of my said Will And I do hereby nominate and

appoint my friend Abraham Darby Son of the said Lucy Darby to be a

trustee in the room of the said John Scott in all the trusts and for all

the purposes in or for which the said John Scott is appointed a trustee

by my said Will And I hereby invest the said Abraham Darby his

heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns jointly with the said

Barnard Dickinson ^Ann Dickinson^ and Lucy Darby with such and the same Estates

trusts powers and authorities as my said last mentioned other trustees

are invested with by my said Will and I direct that the said Abraham

Darby shall be an Executor of my said Will in the room of the said

John Scott jointly and together with the said Barnard Dickinson

Ann Dickinson and Lucy Darby And I do hereby accordingly make

ordain constitute and appoint the said Barnard Dickinson Ann

Dickinson and Lucy Darby and Abraham Darby joint Executors and

Executrixes of my said Will as fully and effectually to all intents and

purposes as if they only had been by me originally constituted and

appointed Executors thereof And in all other respects I ratify and

confirm my said Will In Witness whereof I have hereunto set

my hand and Seal and Published and declared the same to be a

Codicil to my said last Will and testament this nineteenth day

Whereas I Susanna Appleby of Coalbrookdale in the County

of Salop Spinster have made my last Will and testament in writing

bearing date on or about the Sixteenth day of January One thousand

eight hundred and twenty four and also a Codicil thereto and have

by my said Will given unto certain trustees therein named the

Sum of One thousand four hundred pounds Upon trust to apply the

same and the Interest to accrue due thereon unto or for the use

of Susannah Tothill Wife of William Tothill therein described and

her Children And whereas I have within a few days past discovered

that it was the intention of my late revered and beloved Friend

Sarah Darby to make the two next following bequests I am desirous

of carrying such her intention into effect and I do by this writing

which I declare to be a further Codicil to my said last Will and

testament and direct the same to be taken as part thereof revoke and

make void the gift or bequest of Four hundred Pounds part of the said

Sum of One thousand four hundred Pounds and direct that the said

trustees in my said Will named shall stand possessed of One thousand

Pounds only upon the trusts therein expressed with regard to the said

Sum of One thousand four hundred Pounds And I give and bequeath

unto the members of the Society denominated the Shropshire monthly

meeting of Friends the Sum of two hundred Pounds part of the said

Sum of four hundred Pounds to be paid into the hands of their Clerk

for the time being out of my Personal Estate not Secured on Freehold

Security at the end of twelve months from the time of my decease

and in the mean time to carry Interest at the rate of Four Pounds Per

Centum Per Annum Upon trust that they and the members of the said

monthly meeting for the time being do and shall place out and invest

the same on Government or real Security yielding the best Interest

or Annual produce that can be fairly obtained for the same with

power to change such Securities from time to time as they shall

think fit and I direct that such Interest or Annual Produce shall

from time to time be applied for the purpose of defraying the

expenses of keeping the Several meeting houses belonging to the

members of the Shropshire monthly meeting Clean and neat

inside and outside both as to paint and the Walks about them and

also the Grave Yards and Premises thereto belonging and that the

Surplus of such Interest after such expenditure shall be applied in

or towards defraying the expenses of keeping such meeting houses

in good repair And I give and bequeath unto the said Members

of the said Shropshire Monthly Meeting the Sum of two hundred pounds

Pounds the residue of the said Sum of Four hundred Pounds to be

paid at the end of twelve months from the time of my decease

with Interest in the mean time at the rate aforesaid to their

Clerk for the time being Upon trust that they and the Members of

the said monthly meeting for the time being do and shall put

and place the same out at Interest on Government or real Securities

as they shall from time to time deem proper and do and shall

pay apply and dispose of the Interest and Annual Produce thereof

for the purpose of aiding and assisting in the Education of any

Child they might think proper whose Parents may not be able to

afford to give such child Suitable Education or to place him or

her Apprentice but I direct that such Child who shall be so

Educated or place out shall be a member of the said monthly

meeting and also in aiding and assisting in defraying expenses that

may arise in keeping Patients who may be members of the said

Society of Friends belonging to Shropshire monthly meeting at

a place called the Retreat near the City of York or any other retreat

calculated for the reception of such Patients And Whereas by my

said Will I have made ^some^ provision for Joshua Appleby Son of my

Nephew Jonathan Appleby but in as much as the rate of Interest

is much reduced since I made my said Will the provision thereby

made Will not be Sufficient for the purposes intended I do therefore

give and bequeath unto the said trustees named in my said Will

and the Survivor of them his Executors or Administrators the

Sum of ten Pounds Per Annum until the said Joshua Appleby

shall attain his Age of twenty one years Upon trust that they or

he do and shall pay apply and dispose thereof (with the other

provision made by my said Will for the said Joshua Appleby in

the maintenance Education putting out apprentice or otherwise for

the benefit of the said Joshua Appleby as my said trustees shall

from time to time think fit And I direct that the said Annuity of

ten Pounds Per Annum shall be paid out of my residuary

Personal Estate and in all other respects I ratify and confirm my said

Will and Codicil except so far as the former is altered by the latter

In Witness whereof I the said Susanna Appleby have hereunto set

my hand and Seal and Published and declared the same to be

a Second Codicil to my said last Will and testament this twenty

second day of January One thousand and eight hundred and twenty five

This is the third Codicil to the last Will and testament of me

Susanna Appleby of Coalbrook Dale in the County of Salop Spinster

whereas I have in and by my said Will bearing date on or about the

Sixteenth day of January One thousand Eight hundred and twenty

four given and bequeathed unto Barnard Dickinson ^Ann Dickinson^ Lucy Darby

and John Scott therein named their Executors and Administrators

the Sum of One thousand Pounds to be paid to them or the Survivors

or Survivor of them their his or ^her^ Executors or Administrators at

the end of twelve months from the time of my decease and to

carry interest after the rate of Four Pounds Per Centum Per Annum

and also two Shares in the Shropshire Canal Navigation Upon trust

that they or the Survivors or Survivor of them or the Executors or

Administrators of such Survivor did and should lay out and invest

the said Sum of One thousand Pounds in their his or her names or

name in some of the Parliamentary Stocks or Funds of Great Britain

or at Interest on real Securities in England and did and should receive

and take the dividends interest and Annual Produce thereof and

of the said two Canal Shares and from time to time pay the same unto

my Brother Edward Appleby during the term of his natural life the

same to be paid to my said Brother by equal Weekly Payments

through the Agency of my Friend Robert Spence of North Shields in

the County of Northumberland and in case of his death or declining

to act of some other person whom my trustees or trustee for the time

being might fix upon for the purposes Now I do hereby revoke

and make void so much of the foregoing bequests and direction

contained in my said Will as directs my said trustees to pay

dividends interests and Annual Produce unto my said Brother and

the Payment thereof to him by Weekly Payments and in lieu and

Stead thereof I do hereby will and direct my said trustees or trustee

for the time being named in my said Will and first Codicil to pay

the Interest dividends and Annual produce of the Stocks Funds

or Securities in or upon which the said Sum of  One thousand

Pounds shall be so laid out and invested as aforesaid And also the

interest dividends and Annual Proceeds of the same two Canal

Shares into the hands of Elizabeth the present Wife of my said Brother

Edward Appleby during the joint natural lives of them the said Edward

Appleby and Elizabeth his Wife to be by her applied for their mutual use

maintenance and benefit and the same to be paid to her by equal Payments

Weekly and every Week and I do hereby direct and declare that the receipt

or receipts of the said Elizabeth Appleby alone shall from time to time be a

Sufficient discharge and discharges to my said trustees or trustee for the

time being notwithstanding her present Couverture but in case my said

Brother shall happen to Survive his said Wife then I do hereby will

and direct my said trustees or trustee for the time being to pay the said

dividends and Annual proceeds of the said Stocks Funds and Securities

and Canal Shares unto or for the use of my said Brother Edward

Appleby during his natural life by such Weekly Sums or Payments as

the said Robert Spence or in the case of his death or declining to act as

some other person whom my said trustees or trustee for the time being

may fix upon for that purpose shall order and direct it being my wish

that the application of the provision made for my said Brother shall be

seen to by proper persons who will take care as far as possible that it is

applied for his comfort and benefit and upon the decease of my said

brother I hereby direct that the said One thousand Pounds and two

Canal Shares shall go and be divided as I have in and by my said

Will directed of and concerning the same and whereas I have in and by

my said Will given to my trustees therein named the Sum of Forty Pounds

to be by them or the Survivors or Survivor of them distributed amongst the

poor residing at Coalbrook Dale in the County of Salop and have left the

choice of objects to be benefited thereby and the way and manner and time

or times of distributing thereof in their discretion now I do hereby revoke

and make void so much of the last mentioned bequest or direction which

relates to the Choice of objects and the way and manner and time or times

of the distribution of the said Sum of Forty Pounds being in the discretion

of my said trustees or trustee for the time being and instead thereof I do

hereby will and direct that a preference be first given to the three Widows

hereinafter named during their natural lives so long as any part of

the said Forty Pounds shall remain undisposed of (that is to say) Eleanor

Lea Mary Tushingham Widow of Joseph Tushingham and Susanna

Pool all living at Coalbrook Dale aforesaid and I hereby direct that my

said trustees or trustee for the time being shall pay to each of them the said

Eleanor Lea Mary Tushingham and Susanna Pool during their respective

natural lives every four Weeks or until the whole of the said Sum

of Forty Pounds shall have been fully expended the sum of two shillings

and Six pence the first Payments of the said Sum of two Shillings and Six

pence each to be made at the expiration of four Weeks from the day of my 

decease but in case the said Eleanor Lea Mary Tushingham and Susanna

Pool or any one or more of them shall happen to die before the whole of

the said Sum of Forty Pounds shall be fully expended then I do hereby

direct my said trustees or trustee for the time being to pay and distribute

as much of the said Sum of Forty Pounds as shall then remain unapplied

unto and among such of the Poor residing at Coalbrook Dale aforesaid in

the manner and at such time as my said trustees or trustee are directed

to pay and distribute the said Sum of Forty Pounds by my said Will and

I do hereby give and bequeath to my great Nephew Joshua Appleby Son

of my Nephew Jonathan Appleby over and above the provision already

made for him in and by my said Will and Second Codicil the further Sum

of One hundred Pounds to be retained in the hands of my said trustees

or trustee for the time being to be by them him or her applied in their

his or her discretion to aid and assist in the Education of my said great

Nephew at Joseph Edmonson’s School at Panketh near Warrington or any

other similar School until my said great Nephew  shall attain the Age of

Fourteen Years or until he shall be put Apprentice but if my said Great

Nephew Joshua Appleby shall depart this life before the whole if the said

Sum of One hundred Pounds shall be fully expended for the purpose

hereinbefore mentioned as hereby directed I do hereby direct and my Will

is that such part of the same Sum so remaining unexpended shall

sink into and become part of my residuary Personal Estate provided

always and my will is that in case my said Nephew Jonathan Appleby

the Father of the said Jonathan ^Joshua^ Appleby shall interfere and remove his said

Son form under the care of my said trustees or the Survivors or Survivor

of them or shall interfere and prevent his being placed out apprentice

by my said trustees or trustee for the time being then and in either of

such cases happening I hereby direct and declare that the Annual Sum of

ten Pounds by me given to or for the benefit of the said Joshua Appleby by

my said Second Codicil and the Sum of One hundred Pounds now given

to or for his benefit by this Codicil shall cease and not become Payable but

shall sink into and form part of the residue of my said Personal Estate and

I do hereby by all respects confirm my said Will and two Several Codicils

added thereto except so far as the same are hereby revoked or altered and

do declare and direct that this shall be deemed and taken as and for a third

Codicil to my said Will and as part of thereof In Witness whereof  I the said

Whereas I Susanna Appleby of Coalbrook Dale in the County of Salop

Spinster have made my last Will and testament in writing bearing date

on or about the Sixteenth day of January One thousand eight hundred

and twenty four and three Several Codicils thereto and among other

bequests to my said Will contained I gave ^have^ given and bequeathed to

Alfred Darby Son of my late dear Friend Edmund Darby the Sum of Five

hundred Pounds which I have directed to be invested by my trustees on

such Securities as in my said Will mentioned for the benefit of the

said Alfred Darby until his arrival at the Age of twenty one years Now I

do so by this writing which I declare to be a further Codicil to my said Will

and direct shall be considered and taken as part thereof revoke and make

void the said bequest of the said Sum of Five hundred Pounds to the said

Alfred Darby and in lieu and stead thereof I give and bequeath to the said

Alfred Darby the Sum of three hundred Pounds to be paid to him at the end

of twelve months from the time of my death and I give and bequeath

unto my esteemed Friend Thomas Graham Clerk to the Coalbrook Dale

Company the Sum of One hundred Pounds and in case of the death of the

said Thomas Graham in my life time I give and bequeath the said Sum

of One hundred Pounds hereby intended for him unto and equally among

all and every the Children and Child of the said Thomas Graham who shall be

living at the time of my decease and I give and bequeath to my esteemed

Friend William Morris another Clerk of the Coalbrook Dale Company the Sum

of Fifty Pounds which two last mentioned legacies I have bequeathed

to the said Thomas Graham and William Morris respectively in remembrance

of their Friendly attention towards me since my late privation of one

of the best of Friends Sarah Darby and I direct the two last mentioned

legacies to be paid at the end of twelve months from the time of my death

and in all other respects I ratify and confirm my said Will except so far

as the same is revoked or altered by the said Several Codicils or either

of them In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal and

have Published and declared this to be a further Codicil to my said Will

this Seventeenth day of May in the Year of our Lord One thousand

Proved at London with four Codicils 17th October 1827 before the Judge by

Barnard Dickinson and Abraham Darby two of the Executors named in the first

Codicil to whom Adm̅on was granted having first made a Solemn and Sincere

Declaration or Affirmation according to Act of Parliament by Commission duly to

Administer Power reserved of making the like grant to Ann Dickinson Wife of

the said Barnard Dickinson and Lucy Darby Widow the other Executors named in the

said Codicil as they or either of them shall apply for the same.
